Greshams schoolboys give WNCC cricketing lesson
At 12.30pm WNCC collapsed from 59 for 1 to 59 for 4 as Gurney, Sutton and Buchan joined Everall back in the pavilion and with Courtauld due to come in at no 7 and two players still to get to the ground the fat lady was clearing her throat. Talbot Williams and Goodrum came to the rescue and lunch was taken at a respectable 120 for 4.
The afternoon session saw the team scramble another 111 runs for the loss of a further 5 wickets with Goodrum eventually being run out for 59 and the only other notable contribution coming from Marcus Seaman with 29. The Captain declared as soon as Ian Mason arrived at the crease and the gave him the new ball with George Buchan in the hope of an early breakthrough. Both players struck with straight full tosses (admittedly swinging). 7 different bowlers were used to try and break the 3rd wicket partnership and it fell to Alex Thompson to surprise the batsmen with a very rare straight one. The score was 175 when the third wicket went down and with Frankie Sutton (WNCC player) reaching a faultless hundred and the score passing 200, Mason enticed the Greshams no 5 into stealing a third run before being run out. Seaman then stepped forward and volunteered to bowl medium pace rather than the filthy spin he had earlier served up and with a burst of 3 wickets the boys were suddenly 7 wickets down and still required 12 runs. Sadly no further wickets fell and the boys deservedly won by 3 wickets.
The Captain made a presentation at lunchtime to the Greshams captain giving him honorary membership for 5 years.
