Youth policy downs Granta
With 72 hours to go we had 8 players, with 48 hours to go we were down to 6 players and with 24 hours to go we had 7. With it being half term surely there were some teenagers not taking major exams. Our final four players, with an average age of 15 years young, showed us the future and the future is yellow, green, blue and red (not forgetting the pink stripe). The club is in safe hands as George Buchan, Barnaby Esse, Edmund Parker and Sam Kennedy all made their WNCC debuts and led the way in a sparkling fielding performance.
Granta batted first in a 38 overs a side match and Buchan and Esse took the new ball. Esse got the breakthrough, but Granta had moved to 132 for 2 when the Kennedy family, Jonathan and his son Sam (aged 13), bowling in tandem took the next 4 wickets. What a pleasure it is to finally find a WNCC bowler who bowls straight (not you JK) and Sam was thoroughly deserving of his 3 wickets. The fielding was electric with the stumps hit 3 times with direct throws (none sadly given out) and Barnaby Esse taking a stunning running catch to dismiss their danger man.
Overall 8 bowlers were used with Richard and Alex Thompson sharing the final 4 wickets to dismiss Granta for 181 in their final over.
James Everall and Edmund Parker opened the innings. Everall bullied anything over pitched and reached his fifty when the score was 56. Buchan and Everall took the score past 100 with Everall being dismissed for 84 off 81 balls. Jim and Richard Thompson saw the team home with Jim’s 40 runs from 36 balls finishing the game with 3 overs to spare and a win by 7 wickets.
