A nice team picked itself for this highly enjoyable fixture at Trinity College ground Cambridge.
The Captain agreed a proper declaration game and we batted.
Everall got his season moving in the right direction after a tricky tour.
There were excellent contributions from Fairey (48) and Webster (65) – both striking the ball mightily – and a more measured, dare I say, cultured, innings, from Garner (53) playing his first game for some time. The only aberration was the Captain, batting unnecessarily low, who was out first bowl LBW playing a reverse sweep. There are some club traditions better left on tour … Swift revenge for umpire Hammond who had been triggered earlier in the innings.
A generous declaration saw Holloway and Stanton B opening the bowl tidily enough, although Holloway was still in tour mode with his customary wide per over. Ben did manage a couple of LBWs from opposition umpires showing how persuasive he can be and we did look, for a time, like a proper cricket team. This was reinforced by the first of two excellent spells by Walpole J who had earlier declared that he didn’t want to bat or bowl. Luckily the skipper didn`t believe him…
De Vere Hunt, on his domestic debut, found some good rhythm but we made heavy weather of a win which should have been in the bag much earlier than it was.
All in all, an excellent afternoon’s cricket against very genial opposition on a lovely ground.
