Perhaps there is such a thing as a Fisher Hangover or maybe the 4 Greshams 1st XI players who featured in our Fisher win were tuned to perfection by that victory. Whatever the reason WNCC were slightly below Par at Holt today.
Lossing the toss was not an issue as Greshams struggled all morning. The cold 11 C conditions were conducive to Football but WNCC opening attack of Esse B and Nickerson A did a manful job to hold the gifted Harry Blakiston and Matt Barker. Both looked very for good players for their 46 & 65 but we were always nagging at their shirt tales and once they’d departed (Run Out & Caught) the first change duo of Nickerson W and Thommo turned the screw and with help of the second change pairing of Esse O & Gill D we dragged them down to our level at 158 for 7. Thommo with 3 for 32 and Esse O 4 for 35 were exceptional.
However, we tired and Greshams West Norfolk 8 & 9 of Robert Wilson & Angus Turnbull nudged and nurdled their way to a most unlikely total of 236 for 9. Robert Wilson was so sure of his 50 that he started discussing the repercussions with our keeper James Holden! Never a good idea.
WNCC openers Esse O & John Everall looked comfortable but as is so often the wickets began to fall. Holden J & STW also looked secure until after tea but impatient James holed out again and Esse T, Harrison J & Gill D did not trouble the scorers unduly. STW who had occupied the crease for 2 hours without much effect then fell to a straight one from new WNCC Honorary Member Nathan Lomax and, apart from a rearguard partnership of 20 odd by Nickerson W and Esse B, there was very little more to write home about as WNCC capitulated at 85
The Sun came out as the game ended and Alan Ponder & Steve Adams (Director of Sport – Greshams) were kind enough to say that we looked winners at 2.00 but defeated at 3.00!!
More batting needed in 2014
