West Norfolk Youth hold back the tide but King Canute Russell is eventually overun
FF won the toss and batted. What an incredible display of batting by classic Wandering performers. Andy Mawson timed a majestic 143 and led FF to 294 for 2 off 55 overs.
But it wasn’t all doom and gloom, WNCC’s teenage opening attack of Paul Scott and Tom Sherwin were a credit to the Club with Tom’s 6 overs for 13 the best bowling of the day. Ben Stanton turned up, fresh from a traffic jam and toiled away but even Richard (Willow) Wilson’s solid 11 overs of offspin and debut wicket couldn’t hold back the great Mawson.
After lunch the only other stand out performance was Al Russell’s spell of 5 overs of rapid seam, not bad for a keen keeper. Unfortunately the other spinners, Thompson J, Ollie Richer and Thompson A produced very un Swann like performances. Jim flattered for an over or two and Ollie showed potential but Alex’s two overs were a simply diabolical mix of double bouncers and other tosh. Usually this leads to a wicket in lower grade cricket but the opposition were too cultured to make such mistakes and Alex returned to the Nets for another rebuild.
Our fielding and over rate were fantastic and a declaration at half time under 300 was met with relief.
After a quick cameo from Humper, Al Russell and Tom Sherwin showed us the future of WNCC batting with a beautiful stand of 82 in even time. Willow Wilson showed he is a very gifted allrounder after Tom had committed the ultimate sin of running himself out. Willow’s demise ended any chance of a run chase and not even a walloped 35 by W Russell could raise our spirits on a quickly deteriorating track.
So, many thanks to William for rustling up the Russell academy, what a talented bunch. Thanks also to FF for rekindling the fixture after a problematic start last year. We must work hard to field a stronger side next year.
