Youth saves the day
After late cry offs from key members of the squad, WNCC were fortunate to have available 2 young players in Freddie Fairey (age 8) and Harry Thompson (10). In baking hot sunshine, after losing the toss, Castle Rising elected to bat and ground out a relatively low score of 153 in 46 overs, with Freddie (1 for 15) and Harry (3 for 15) bowling extremely well. This was after some very good opening bowling from Thompson Snr and Waters, well supported by some unusually good WNCC catching and legside stumpings.
Castle Rising resorted to some short pitched , hostile bowling reminiscent of the “bodyline series” – however WNCC resisted well with some good batting from Webster (24), Holden (40*)and Everall (55).
Having lost to Castle Rising quite convincingly over the past 2 years, it was especially pleasing to beat them with a side which must have one of the lowest average ages this season!
